Sometimes, it seems like fat is a bad word – but in fact we need both fats and oils for good health. They contain essential fatty acids, as weel as vitamin A, D, E, & K, which are all important for our overall development.

The secret is to know more about different types of fat, and  make sensible choices about how much you consume.

Saturated fats can have a negative effect on our helth when taken in excess. These fats raise your Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘bad’ cholesterol levels, which lead to an increased risk of heart disease and strokes. Saturated fats are generally solid at room temperature, and are found in animal products like meat, meat products, butter, poultry skin, egg yolk, whole milk, cream and cheese.

Saturated fats are commonly obtain fatty acids from the Omega-3 and Omega-6 family, which help reduce the risk of heart disease, and aid brain development in children. Unsatured fats are found in nuts, seeds and oily fish like salmon, as well as many types of vegetable oil.
